The Sarasota Sun is a daily newspaper located in Sarasota, Florida. It is owned by The Grand Metropolitan Company and part of its regional asset group. The current Publisher is Grand Metropolitan's Chairman/CEO Vin Lee.
Sarasota County is located on the southwestern coast of the state of Florida in the United States. Its current official limits include Sarasota Bay and several barrier islands between the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. The U.S. Census Bureau 2008 estimate for the county was 372,057 but during the tourist season, population swells to over 1.2 million.
The Sarasota Sun was conceptualized as The Sarasotan, a regional ISP (internet service provider). The purpose was to allow seasonal tourists to stay in touch with local and regional news and activities in the off-season. In early 2008, Luxury goods conglomerate Grand Metropolitan acquired The Sarasota Sun for an undisclosed price. The Grand Metropolitan Companies have every intention of upholding the journalistic integrity of Sarasota in the new version of The Sarasota Sun. While the original publication was structured to be subscription based, Grand Metropolitan is planning on releasing The Sarasota Sun both in print and online as a FREE publication and promoting the beauty and charm in all that is Sarasota.
